I am a Data Scientist.
I majored in Data Science in grad school.
Without checking stackoverflow, can you answer the following questions on top of your head:
- What does it mean if macro-precision is lower than micro-precision?
- How would you set up two dashboard pages to compare a single multi-classification ML model, but one using single-labelling and another using multi-labelling?
To be honest, I can’t answer them immediately when I was faced with these questions. Shortly after, I realize there’s one way to make it happen. As you know, Sherlock Holmes can tell differences among 243 tobacco ashes. Data Science is similar with detection, one to find hidden pattern in data, virtual and statistical world, and another to find hidden trace in physical and crime world. So, I decided to start a new journey of 100 days of continuing study and using Medium as my notebook to publish study journals and summaries.
There are two domains in data science that I plan to finish in this first 100 days: First, refresh the essential concepts in data science, knitting the familiar concepts to a knowledge net, and the goal is that I’ll know now the net moves when a knot is pushed to a direction. Second, to learn how data science is applied to product — yes, data science is well used in to-customer tech companies, but to-client consulting applies data science differently.
I’ve decided the right book to my first goal: Practical Statistics for Data Scientists. The book enlists 52 concepts from EDA and sampling to hypothesis testing and ML algorithms. I plan to study at least one concept a day, with an article on what I learnt and what sparked my thinking — questions mostly I imagine, and answers if I know or not. If multiple concepts are tangled with each other, I’ll draw mind map to show why a new concept is created and how they are related.
For the domain of data science applied in product, I have a couple books lined up but haven’t decided yet. I’ll make a decision when it comes to near of finish of Practical Statistics for Data Scientists.
Good luck to me and stay tuned.
